Throughout the past year, several people in my church have said that I have a good singing voice and should join the choir or praise team. I’ve thought about it quite a bit, prayed about it even more and finally decided that God was, in fact, calling me to sing in one of these groups on Sunday mornings. I opted for the praise team, as I already know much of the music they sing and I enjoy it more than classical hymns (though I don’t mind worshiping God by singing hymns).

I told the praise team director several weeks ago that I would join the group, but that I’d have to wait for the men’s bible study I was in to finish. The two didn’t conflict, but participating in both would have meant I would leave home in the morning and not return until 9:00 p.m. The bible study wrapped up a week ago, so Thursday was my first opportunity to attend a praise team rehearsal.

The rehearsal got off to a slow start, as someone had to make photocopies of music for me, find a music stand and a microphone (minus the goose neck, unfortunately), etc. Then, to top it off, there were some audio problems with some of the monitors. After getting all of that straightened out, we got started.

We sang the following songs during the 90-minute practice:

  • I Adore You (an Advent song)
  • We Light The Candle (another Advent song)
  • I Walk By Faith
  • The River Is Here
  • Let the Walls Fall Down
  • Hear Our Praises
  • As We Seek Your Face
  • Better Is One Day

I know some of the songs quite well, but there are others that I had never heard (or don’t remember hearing) prior to Thursday night. So, while I’m not as prepared as I’d like to be, I’m going to sing with the group on Sunday. In singing, I’ll be worshiping God, so I’m sure he’ll help me through things if He thinks I need it. Wish me luck!
