Recap: Switchfoot and Relient K Concert
Wow. It’s hard to believe, but a single word really can describe last night’s Switchfoot and Relient K concert.
All four bands (Cloverleaf, Ruth, Relient K and Switchfoot) were great, but Relient K and Switchfoot were amazing. The musical talent of Relient K’s members amazed me: the lead singer played both the guitar and piano (and, of course, sung lyrics) and one of the guitarists played the guitar, banjo and a xylophone-type instrument during several songs.
Both of the headliners have amazing crowd interaction. While Relient K was singing Sleigh Ride from their new Christmas album Let It Snow Baby… Let It Reindeer, one of those inflatable Christmas front yard display things was brought on stage and inflated. Then, to top it off, snow came down from the lighting rigs. We weren’t in standing in front of the stage so none fell on us (which I was a bit disappointed about), but it was still awesome. During their set, the lead singer of Switchfoot came off stage and into the crowd, and not just the folks standing up front: he came into the first few rows of the lower section of Bryce Jordan Center.
Prior to the concert, I didn’t know much of either bands’ music, but they played enough of their current stuff that I wasn’t completely lost. Some of Switchfoot’s stuff was just truly amazing… Dare You To Move, We Were Meant To Live and This Is Your Life sent chills down by spine and, dare I say it, nearly brought tears to my eyes. I know that sounds corny, but check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
If either band ever comes back to the area, I’m definitely going to check them out. Plus, they’re usually at Creation Festival, so at the very worst I should get to see them this summer. If you’re not familiar with either of these bands but you’re into rock music (and optionally, Christian/inspirational music) you should definitely check them out. Both bands have some of their music online so you can listen to it for free before you buy.

So, ya got me thinking… Dug through the deeper sections of my rather ridiculous music collection and found Switchfoot’s “The Legend of Chin,” their debut album. If I remember correctly, it was “Chem 6A” that caught my ear and caused me to buy the disc. Don’t know much about their new stuff, however. Off to other corners of the inter-web!
