Recap: Parents Meeting

Last night was The Gathering’s first meeting of the winter/spring season after two weeks off for the Christmas and New Year holidays.  Parents were asked to attend so details of the spring schedule could be flushed out, particularly who prepares dinner and provides transportation.  Additionally, I wanted to make a decision on whether or not [...]

Recap: Lunch And A Movie

Sunday afternoon, instead of having a normal meeting of dinner, worship and study, the middle and high school students went to the Susquehanna Valley Mall for lunch, a bit of shopping and a movie.
We left church and gathered at the mall’s unofficial food court, an area where there’s an Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Bavarian Pretzel, Subway, [...]

Improving Relational Leadership Skills

For the few of you who read this site, I have a question for you.
If a person has a more task-oriented than relational leadership style (i.e. would rather cross things off a to-do list than spend time on interpersonal relationships), how does he improve his relational leadership skills?

The first week of the series focuses on having a heart for others and caring for [...]

This afternoon, nine members and five leaders of my church’s youth group went tubing on the Susquehanna River. We were scheduled to go tubing on Penns Creek, but we haven’t had too much rain lately, so the creek is quite low. So low, in fact, that if we had gone tubing, we would [...]

Summer Youth Ministry Event - Loyalsock Trail and Creek

Yesterday afternoon, four members and three leaders of my church’s youth group traveled to Laporte, PA to hike a portion of the Loyalsock Trail. If I recall correctly, I believe we started at a parking lot on Mead Road, a gravel road off of U.S. Route 220 (approximately 2 miles north of the US [...]

30 Hour Famine

Over the weekend, from 1:00p.m. on Friday through 7:00p.m. on Saturday, 10 youth and 4 leaders participated in Christ UMC’s annual 30 Hour Famine, an event sponsored by World Vision to help fight hunger.
As always, the event was a great time. Kids arrived shortly after school and we had free time until about 6:00p.m.; [...]

PDYM Seminar

Over the weekend, I spent some time up in Montoursville, PA at a Purpose Driven Youth Ministry seminar, hosted by the kind folks at Faith UMC.
The seminar focused on the five biblical purposes (worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism), the five types of youth ministry students (community, crowd, congregation, committed and core) and how to [...]
